Edition of 15
This rare print comes from William Quigley’s 1995 Los Angeles Civil War series, inspired by the courage of soldiers of all ages — including the young Black drummer boys who served in both Union and Confederate armies. Most were only 10–15 years old, carrying messages, setting marching rhythms, and risking their lives on the battlefield. In tribute to their youth, this edition is limited to just 15 prints.
Created near the epicenter of the 1992 Los Angeles riots — which erupted on Quigley’s birthday, April 29 — the work reflects the tension, conflict, and human struggles that echo through history. Conceived only a month before its October 13, 1995 opening, the exhibition included 16 paintings, a carved sculpture of a 15-year-old Black Union soldier, and a 40-page hand-painted Civil War diary.
