This image is based on the first 6ft Lincoln portrait created in 1995 for Quigley's Civil War Series. He was living in LA painting on his birthday, April 29, 1992, when the Rodney King Riots escalated around his West Hollywood studio. Having never witnessed such an intense revolt, he used the rebellion as a catalyst for a series of works titled the Civil War Series—inspired by using powerful images from Matthew Brady to paint from and metaphorically comparing them to images from daily crime in the US; Showing as apparent global leaders in everything else, as humanitarians we have not learned or evolved much since 1861. Equality, peace, unity, and opposition to racism has been an ongoing recurring theme in all his work.
There are 9 Lincoln paintings and 6 Lincoln prints to date.
Originally published in 2011 by Boston University master printer Aithan Shapira who worked out of Ken Tyler's studio.
