Dr. King was 39 years old when killed on April 4th, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. To create the original 74 x 74 inch painting, Quigley used only his fingers attempting to make 1 million individual black oil paint and charcoal marks signifying the Great March of Freedom on Washington August 28, 1963.

Part of Quigley's ongoing examination of American history and the fight for equality—a theme sparked by witnessing racial riots as a young boy in Philadelphia in 1968/69.
