Dr. King was 39 years old when killed on April 4th, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. To create the original 74 x 74 inch painting Quigley used only his fingers attempting to make 1 million individual black oil paint and charcoal marks signifying the Great March of Freedom on Washington August 28, 1963.
